Born in St. Petersburg Russia, raised in the Twin Cities, Dr. Roman Gerber comes to us with a wealth of optometry experience from Chicago to The Gambia, West Africa. His optometry skills include providing comprehensive exams, performing advanced technological diagnostic tests and the care and management of ocular diseases. Before joining Apple Valley Eye Care, Dr. Gerber was the managing optometrist at two busy Chicago optometry clinics. While attending school at Illinois College of Optometry, his academic experience included two optometry extern positions with Veterans Affairs Medical Clinics in Rhode Island and Delaware. There he provided primary care and ocular disease management to veterans of war. Dr. Gerber also served as a representative to the American Optometric Association and was a national delegate to the AOA House of Delegates. As a student he was awarded the Wildermuth Foundation Scholarship, was an ICO Trustee Scholar, participated in the Clinical Honors and was a tutor in multiple courses.
“I became interested in optometry after seeing my grandfather struggle with blindness, due to macular degeneration and war trauma. I could not be more excited to return home to Minnesota and to join an incredible practice like Apple Valley Eye Care.”
Dr. Gerber became passionate about international optometry after going on a service trip to Honduras in 2010. Since then, he has been involved in providing care at charity clinics in rural India, Mexico and Thailand. Currently, Dr. Gerber is a part of a team setting up sustainable clinics throughout The Gambia, a small country in Western Africa. In April of this year he spent three weeks teaching and training Gambians in how to deliver eye care in a rural setting.
“I am very happy and proud to announce the addition of Dr. Gerber to our clinical staff,” said Dr. Patrick Wellik. “It is exciting to bring in another progressive doctor, with some new ideas and treatments. I am confident that our patients will be well cared for by Dr. Gerber.”
When he is not caring for the eyes of people around the world, he enjoys spending time with his family, running, biking and playing tennis. Drs. Blomquist, Wellik, Haverly and the staff are excited to welcome Dr. Gerber to our team. He is now taking patients. Give us a call to set up your appointment today.
